Camargue Rice Fields — Live Satellite Health Report

About this region

The Camargue is the Rhône delta — a flat, salty, wind-scoured wetland in southern France where rice is the defining crop. Flooding the paddies with fresh Rhône water leaches salt from the soil and creates the standing-water environment rice demands. This is one of the few places in Europe where NDWI (water index) is as important as NDVI for monitoring crop status, because the flooded phase is a deliberate and essential part of the agricultural cycle.

Climate & growing cycle

Rice is sown in April–May into flooded fields, grows through the hot Mediterranean summer, and is drained for harvest in September–October. The seasonal cycle is extreme: bare or flooded in spring, a wall of green by July, and bare again by autumn. The Mediterranean heat and abundant Rhône water make this a uniquely productive rice environment at Europe’s edge.

Satellite monitoring insights

NDVI peaks above 0.8 at full canopy — as high as any crop on Earth — reflecting the dense, intensely green rice canopy. NDWI swings positive during the flooded phase, producing one of the clearest water-cycle signals visible from space: the fields transition from a water signature in spring to a vegetation signature in summer and back to bare soil in autumn. This dual-index monitoring is essential for rice — NDVI tells you the crop status, but NDWI confirms the paddies are properly flooded. A field with low NDWI in May is a field that wasn’t flooded on schedule.
