About this region
Sancerre, on the upper Loire, produces some of the world’s most distinctive Sauvignon Blanc — crisp, mineral, and flint-driven — from the chalky Kimmeridgian marl soils that also underpin Chablis. The region also produces lighter reds and rosés from Pinot Noir. The landscape is rolling hills above the river, with southeast-facing slopes catching morning sun in a region where every degree of aspect and every hour of sunlight matters for ripening.
Climate & growing cycle
The climate is cool continental at the northern limit of Sauvignon Blanc ripening. Spring frost is a chronic risk — the Loire’s position means cold air pools in the valley, threatening buds well into April. Budbreak falls in mid-April, flowering in mid-June, and harvest in late September to early October. The canopy is small and carefully managed for airflow and disease control — mildew is a constant threat in wet years, and an open canopy is the first line of defence.
Satellite monitoring insights
NDVI peaks modestly at 0.35–0.5 on Sancerre vines — reflecting the cool climate and open canopy style. The index’s trend is a direct readout of whether the vintage is shaping up well or running into trouble: a steady climb through June and July signals a smooth development, while a stalled or declining NDVI points to frost damage, mildew pressure, or water stress. NDMI is essential for tracking moisture in the Kimmeridgian marl, which can hold water well but drains differently on slopes depending on marl depth. NDRE tracks chlorophyll at veraison, correlating with the aromatic compound development that defines Sancerre’s character.
Key metrics
| Index | Peak range | Vintage signal |
|---|---|---|
| NDVI | 0.35–0.5 | Canopy trajectory — smooth climb = good; stall = trouble |
| NDMI | 0.0–0.2 | Marl moisture through the dry August weeks |
| NDRE | 0.2–0.35 | Chlorophyll at veraison = aromatic potential |
